Preface: This is written for those familiar with the Hindu and Buddhist term Maya and its meaning. If you are not familiar with the term then this post might not make sense for you. If you are familiar with the term then let’s jump in.

Do you know that there are people with a net worth of 100 Million dollars plus who work night and day to even earn more money? You would think that with that much money in the bank, these folks would just retire and ride off into the sunset. But no, Maya or the great illusion takes no prisoners.

Maya operates under this one lie and you see this insidious lie everywhere. Even in children’s movies…And the lie is this

“Once I acquire this external so-and-so then I will live happily ever after”.

My question is this. Has Maya ever once delivered on this promise of happily ever after? If you look into it, you’ll find that Maya has never delivered on this promise to you. Not once.

  • You get the hot woman or man but you find out he or she is a terrible communicator.
  • You get the million dollars but then your bully from high school wins the Super Lotto for $100M. Now his immense wealth makes you forget about your riches.
  • You get the super expensive nice car but the maintenance costs, upkeep, and general worries rob you of the enjoyment.

Maya controls the world. You can see it in movies, music, social media, television commercials, etc. There is always a proverbial happiness carrot being dangled by Maya as a gateway to a happy life. But what Maya fails to tell you is that there is a catch with anything that it offers. The way of Maya begets more Maya. You finally become a ladies man who can bed a lot of women then Maya inspires more and more sexual cravings and before you know it you’re now in the arena of sexual deviance. You finally get the money Maya promised you, then it increases your cravings astronomically so now you want more and more money. The thirst of Maya can never be quenched. That’s why you see multi-billionaires who should probably leave the money arena alone and tend to their soul still chasing after money like an addict. Plotting their way to gaining more “power”.

There’s one way to live happily ever after and that is to drop all of Maya’s lies and surrender to the present. Even beyond surrendering to the present is to be grateful for the present. If you can react to every situation with this statement, “Thank you for everything. I have no complaints whatsoever” then you are well on your way to defeating Maya. This sentence will return you to peace because you are expressing gratitude in every arena of your life. And once you express gratitude to a circumstance, that circumstance will immediately open up to show you how it can serve you. By expressing gratitude, you see yourself in every situation without separation. You will see how each situation was designed for you…the only thing that was in the way of seeing this in the past was Maya’s lies.

Now sometimes when people read what I write they misunderstand me. “Mr. Writer, you just want me to live life as a homeless dude or just sit in a cave and do nothing?” Au contraire mon frère. Plunge into life, enjoy it, pursue your goals, and plan a phenomenal life for yourself and your loved ones. However, do all this without being too attached. Don’t let Maya sucker you into believing that your happiness hinges on anything external. It’s a lie. Long-lasting and steady happiness is an inner journey.

When I play the Mario video game, I fully explore Koopa Kingdom but I don’t get suckered into believing that I am one of the characters. I can play as a hallucinating plumber with a pet happy dragon that can fly but I know I am not this plumber. Mario is simply a character.

Well in the world of Maya if you remember that you’re playing a character then you won’t be suckered in by Maya’s tricks.

That way when Maya comes to whisper “Hey so and so I noticed you are unhappy. Well I have this carrot that can make you happy and complete you”.

You can tell Maya “Yeah Yeah. I know your tricks. I am as complete now as I ever will be”.

Then you can go out and enjoy the world dispassionately. For you see Maya has no power over you other than the power you willingly give it by buying into its many tricks and lies. P.S. I know my writing has been repetitive but like Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times”. So practice the one kick of dispassion 10,000 times till Maya fears you. Namaste.
